You look at her for a moment, then nod. “Alright,” you say. “I’ll come.”
She watches you for a second, as if confirming you mean it, then gives a small, satisfied nod. “Good,” she replies. “I was hoping you’d say that.”
You lean back slightly, letting the decision settle. It doesn’t feel like much on its own, just an agreement to show up somewhere later, but it shifts something in the moment, even if only slightly.
“It’s nothing serious,” she adds. “Just people, music, a bit of noise. You don’t have to stay long.”
“I probably won’t,” you say.
“That’s fine,” she replies. “Just showing up is enough.”
There’s a brief pause, the kind that doesn’t need filling, before she tilts her head slightly, studying you again, though this time with less intensity.
“You know,” she says, “a couple of drinks might actually help. Get you to loosen up a bit. You might finally talk about whatever’s been sitting in your head all day.”
You don’t respond immediately.
The suggestion lands lightly on the surface, but it carries more weight than she probably intends.
You consider it.
