"Yeah," you say. "A bit."
The words sit there a second. Not uncomfortable, but not something you usually say out loud. She doesn't react right away, which somehow makes it easier.
"Fair," she says. "That's actually fair."
You look up. "No lecture?"
A small smile. "You've heard all of them already. I'd just be repeating things you know."
"That's true."
She folds her arms loosely. "It comes in waves, doesn't it?"
You nod. "Yeah. Worse when things are quieter."
She understands without asking you to explain. "Then don't deal with it on your own. That's usually when it gets louder."
You huff a small laugh. "Professional advice?"
"Extremely. I'm very qualified in not making bad decisions."
"I'll keep that in mind."
A pause, easier this time. "You know," she adds, picking up her fork, "we're going out later. Nothing serious, just drinks."
You raise an eyebrow. "You realise how that sounds."
She smiles. "You don't have to drink. Just show up. Talk. Exist somewhere that isn't this place for a couple of hours."
You consider it. "That part I might manage."
"Good. Because I'm inviting you, and I'm not taking no this time."
You shake your head, but there's a faint smile there now.
What's your decision?
