The day doesn't end so much as thin out. Calls space further apart, voices drop, chairs scrape as people unhook from the rhythm that held them since morning. You log out, pack up, and move with the crowd without quite being part of it.
Outside, the air is cooler, open. Normally you'd head straight for the station. Tonight you don't. You step to one side of the entrance, where you can see the door without being in the way, and you wait. For Elizabeth. You tell yourself it's nothing, a few minutes, then the station like always.
People pass, in pairs and alone. The door opens. Not her. You glance at your phone without unlocking it, already aware of what's behind the screen: the message you sent earlier, sitting there, not needing anything from you yet.
You could update the cell now. Dane would pick up. Mango would answer. Both want the same thing, how far you've got.
Behind you, the door opens again. Ahead, the evening waits to be filled.
