You don't answer.
You let the question sit between you, your gaze drifting past her as if something else had caught it. Not a rehearsed deflection, just a quiet refusal to step into what she's asking. You pick at nothing on the table, giving her enough silence to understand without forcing it into words.
She watches a second longer, then exhales softly. "Alright," she says, not pressing. "You don't have to tell me."
No edge to it, no disappointment, just acceptance of a line you drew without explaining. She leans back, easing the weight of the moment instead of holding onto it. The silence that follows feels lighter.
"So," she says after a while, deliberately changing key. "There's a thing tonight."
"A thing?"
"A party. A few of us are going. Nothing serious, just somewhere to be that isn't here." A beat. "You should come. Might help."
"Help with what?"
"Whatever you're not talking about." A faint smile.
You let that sit alongside everything else you haven't said. Simple on the surface, heavy enough to be worth considering. She doesn't push. She just waits.
