When the clock edges into lunch, you don't wait for anyone. You pull off the headset, close the system with the same quiet efficiency that carried you through the morning, and stand before anyone can call your name. Elizabeth says something from across the room, something light, maybe a reminder, but you don't quite catch it. Or you choose not to.
You're already moving.
The staircase down to the café feels longer than it should, the hum of the call centre fading behind you layer by layer until it gives way to something softer. The smell of coffee reaches you before the room does, burnt at the edges, mixed with something warm and forgettable.
You don't join the queue. You find a table at the far end, facing away from most of the room, and sit with a quiet intention that feels out of place here. The laptop comes out almost at once. You don't think about it. You open it, and within seconds you're back inside the other system, the one that has started to feel more real than the one upstairs.
