You don’t remember falling asleep, only waking up repeatedly, your thoughts circling the same points, never settling long enough to rest. By morning, your body feels heavier, your head worse, the dull ache from the night before returning with more insistence.
You sit up slowly, the room tilting for a moment before it steadies.
Your phone rings.
It is Dane.
You stare at it for a second before answering.
“What did you do?” he asks. No greeting. No pause.
Your throat feels dry. “What do you mean?”
A short silence follows. Not empty, measured. “Mango’s pissed,” he says. “You got flagged.”
The words land harder than you expect, even after everything.
You close your eyes briefly, exhaling. “I thought I could push a bit more.”
“Yeah,” Dane replies. “You pushed straight into compliance.”
There’s nothing to argue, nothing to fix.
The call ends.
Your phone lights up again not long after.
A message.
It is Mango.
