"No shit!" It comes out sharper than you meant. "I said I'm fine," you add, the words tumbling after like an afterthought.
The shift is immediate. Elizabeth freezes. The concern in her eyes hardens into something close to anger. You've crossed a line.
"I didn't say you weren't," she says, carefully level.
You shake your head, already knowing you've gone too far, not ready to back down. "It's nothing. I've got it under control."
Your phone buzzes. A reminder: *"Mango doesn't like loose ends."*
She holds your gaze, then nods once. "Right." The word lands heavier than it should. She doesn't press, doesn't try again, she stands and leaves without another word or a glance back.
The table is quieter after that. You sit a moment longer, the words replaying worse each time. You close the laptop slowly and tell yourself it doesn't matter. It doesn't settle as cleanly as you'd like.
