You stand to order, and your legs don't cooperate, they lock, and for a second you just stay there, fixed to the floor, until the noise of the cafe rushes back and reminds you where you are.
You check your watch in a flat panic. Ten minutes left of lunch. Relief, thin and ugly: after this morning, missing the restart would have finished you. Your legs release, you stumble, catch a table, steady yourself. The last forty minutes don't feel like forty minutes, for the amount of work you did, you expected the afternoon to be gone.
You join the queue, short, most people already fed, and order pancakes and baked beans. Eat heavy now, spend nothing on dinner. The noodles at home are almost out, payday is two weeks off, and after the deduction they took this morning, the next few months are not going to be kind.
You pay, take the plate, and stop. Elizabeth is sitting at your table. Not disappointed. Concerned. She nods, gives you a small smile.
"You know I can tell when you're avoiding me, right?"
You lower your head. You don't want to be that person. However little you want to talk right now, she is one of the few people who actually care whether you're alright, and that is not a thing to throw away. "Believe me…" you start.
"I do." She winks, with an edge of sarcasm you don't miss. "Do you want to talk?"
You look at her for a long moment.
