You don't move when the office starts to empty. Chairs scrape, voices loosen, people drift toward the cafeteria in small groups. Normally you'd follow, if not for the food then for the routine, but today you stay. You tell yourself you're not hungry. The truth is closer to the weight that hasn't left you since this morning.
You lean back and stare at your screen without seeing it, caught between the work you should be doing and the work you've already done. The room empties until the quiet feels deliberate.
You don't notice her until she's there.
"I figured you'd still be here." Elizabeth, one hand on the partition, studying you. Not quite concern, but close.
"Not going?"
You shake your head. "Not today."
She weighs it, then: "You've been off all morning. You sure you're alright?"
"I'm fine." It comes out flatter than you meant.
She doesn't push, but she doesn't buy it either. She tips her head toward the door everyone else used. "Come on. I'll get you something. You don't have to sit here pretending you're not hungry."
A small offer, and more than a small offer, a way out of the loop you've been circling. You glance at your screen, then at her.
