You take large strides up the staircase to your office. On entering the call centre, you notice that most people are busy with their work. You don't greet anybody, no one greets you. You walk pass the foot traffic to get to your desk.
"I saved you coffee," a voice comes from your right followed by a pale hand that drops a cup of coffee. You stare at the coffee absent minded then back at the person who got you the coffee.
"Earth to Julian," she snaps her fingers in the air, drawing you back to work. "Are you OK?"
"Oh yes I am."
Elizabeth smiled. "I'm pretty sure your sleepless night have other things to say about that answer."
Elizabeth is one of the few people you spoke to in the office. She's kind, friendly, and have had your back on so many occasions you cannot even count. She pulls a chair halfway toward your desk and sits on its edge, studying your face the way nurses study patients.
“You look terrible,” she says gently.
You pick up the coffee and take a sip mostly to avoid answering. “Thanks for the coffee.”
“That’s not an answer.” You shrug faintly.
“Didn’t sleep well.”
Elizabeth scuffs. “Didn’t sleep well,” she repeats slowly, as if testing the phrase for weaknesses. “Or didn’t sleep at all?”
You stare at your monitor, pretending to read an email that isn’t there. “Something like that.”
She watches you for a moment longer. “Julian… I thought you were recovering?” Her voice is lower now. “What happened today? You came in late, you look like you’ve been through a war, and you drink coffee like it’s keeping you alive. What’s going on?”
